Annapurna Pictures founded in 2011 by Megan Ellison is a production company that specializes in art films that larger studios consider too risky. You may remember their releases from last year, Phantom Thread and Detroit. Past year titles include Joy, Foxcatcher, American Hustle, Her, Zero Dark Thirty and Lawless. Here is what is on the slate for this year:
Oscar Hopefuls From Annapurna
The Sisters Brothers
The Sisters Brothers is directed by Jacques Audiard, who also did Dheepan and Rust and Bone. The film is the story of two brothers who are assassins chasing a gold prospector. The Sisters Brothers stars John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed was released on September 21st.
If Beale Street Could Talk
If Beale Street Could Talk is the story of a woman pregnant with her first child desperately working to prove that her fiancé is innocent of a crime. The film is directed by Barry Jenkins who also directed last year’s best picture winner Moonlight. It stars KiKi Layne, Stephan James, and Regina King. If Beale Street Could Talk releases November 30th.
Vice
Vice explores the elevation of a bureaucrat to the most powerful man in the world as the Vice President to George W. Bush. The film is directed by Adam McKay who won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for The Big Short. It stars Amy Adams, Alison Pill, and Christian Bale. Vice will be released on December 21st.
Destroyer
Nicole Kidman stars as a police detective connecting with people from her undercover past to try and make peace.
